Strong Santa Ana winds return Monday-Tuesday, bringing potentially damaging winds and critical fire weather

NBC 7's team of meteorologists provides the most accurate 10-day forecast in San Diego. Here's what you need to know about today's weather

NBCUniversal Media, LLC A daily video forecast from NBC 7's First Alert weather team.

We are starting the morning off with patchy clouds and cool morning lows. We’ll have a mix of 30s and 40s over the mountains and valleys, and 40s and 50s over the coast.

Another Santa Ana wind event is here once again, prompting multiple warnings to be issued by the National Weather Service. A Red Flag Warning for San Diego County's mountains and valleys will be in effect 8 a.m. Monday through 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The combination of these strong winds, very low humidity, and dry vegetation will create critical fire weather conditions. Please be extra cautious and avoid being the spark that could start a fire in the next few days.

There is also a High Wind Warning issued for the same areas, effective from 4 am Tuesday through Tuesday at 8 pm, due to the possibility of damaging wind gusts ranging between 30 to 75+ mph in the mountains, and for the valleys 55 to 65 mph.

These strong Santa Ana winds will bring the potential for critical fire weather conditions, as well as the possibility of damaging and dangerous winds.

  • Damaging winds: These winds could be powerful enough to knock down trees and power lines, which can cause power outages and block roads.
  • Travel difficulties: High-profile vehicles, like trucks and buses, are more susceptible to being affected by strong winds, making travel more dangerous for them.
  • Damage to unsecured outdoor objects: Things like patio furniture, trash cans, or other loose items left outside could be blown away or damaged by the wind.

Unfortunately, a secondary Santa Ana wind event is expected to begin Thursday next week. This one will be weaker than the one earlier in the week. However, with no rain in the forecast and back-to-back Santa Anas, we can expect ongoing periods of critical fire danger.

There’s a slight chance of rain next weekend, with only a 20% to 30% likelihood. Stay tuned for more updates on any potential rain in the forecast.
