San Diego weather: Excessive heat warning extended as triple-digit temps expected in San Diego County deserts

NBC 7's team of meteorologists provides the most accurate 10-day forecast in San Diego. Here's what you need to know about today's weather

NBCUniversal Media, LLC A daily video forecast from NBC 7's First Alert weather team.

An EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect until tonight for inland valleys, and foothills, while the mountains remain in the excessive heat warning until Sunday night as temperatures stay close to 100 degrees. Places like Campo and Palomar Mountain could set new record highs today. Expect it to stay unseasonably hot through the weekend!

Beaches are under the marine layer this mornings with low clouds and patchy fog, but the current inversion may prevent the marine layer to clear as quickly today. We expect coastal areas to be near or slightly below normal today, with strong rip currents and high swells between 3-5 feet, sets up to 7 feet. Rember to swim close to a lifeguard, if possible.

The EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING for San Diego's deserts will continue until next Wednesday, July 10th. Temperatures will range between 112-121 degrees. The long extended heatwave makes it even more dangerous. Deserts may not get a break from this king of heat for a while.

High pressure will sit over our region keeping daytime highs above normal for most of next week, a southeasterly wind flow may introduce muggy conditions for the east county later next week. We don't have enough confidence on any monsoon storm to materialize, but the humidity will create uncomfortable conditions.

Heat warnings also apply to humans' furry companions, as well. San Diego County officials advised residents to keep their pets indoors, so long as the temperature is lower inside. People should also:

  • exercise animals in the early morning or evening to avoid prolonged heat exposure to the heat, and also skip strenuous runs or hikes;
  • keep pets' water supply in a tip-proof container, and make sure the dish always topped off and stays cool (as pets won't drink water that is too hot);
  • if possible, install a misting system to keep outdoor areas cooler;
  • be sure an animal, if it's outside, is constantly in a shaded area;
  • avoid taking pets on car trips without air-conditioning unless necessary, as a vehicle can quickly heat up (on an 85-degree day, a car can reach 102 degrees in 10 minutes, even with the windows down);
  • avoid walking dogs on hot pavement; and
  • allow dogs to use a child's wading pool.

Our unseasonably hot weather will continue into next week. I don't see a break from the heat anytime soon. . .
