Exposure Skate has been held in Encinitas for 13 years, and for women and non-binary skateboarders, the tournament is about more than just the competition. NBC 7’s Adonis Albright reports.

Dozens of athletes are participating in the world’s largest women’s skateboarding competition at Encinitas Community Park. The goal is to empower women and young girls.

California Live correspondent Angela Sun meets Olympic skateboarder Amelia Brodka, who co-founded the Encinitas-based nonprofit ‘Exposure Skate.’ The organization is changing the narrative in the male-dominated sport by providing skateboarding classes, camps and retreats for women, girls, trans and nonbinary individuals.

Porter Elementary School students are learning new tricks and having fun with their friends but one group of students in San Diego’s Lincoln Park neighborhood want something more — a skate park in their own neighborhood.

Dr. Maunela Ippolito is a fifth-grade teacher at Porter Elementary who loves to skateboard. Now, she’s teaching that passion to her students, and they’re all on a bigger mission to make it easier to skate in their neighborhood.

“People are like: ‘Are you going for the gold?’ And I’m like: ‘If they’re giving away gold medals for whoever has the most fun, I got it wrapped up,’” Macdonald said Wednesday. “I definitely won the gold medal for most fun.”
