Children’s Hospital of Orange County and Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego announced a merger Wednesday, combining the two hospitals into a health care system called Rady Children’s Health.

After months of bargaining, unionized nurses on Thursday voted to ratify a new three-year contract with Rady Children’s Hospital, averting a second strike that was planned for next week.

Days ahead of a planned strike, unionized nurses reached a tentative contract agreement with Rady Children’s Hospital, described by union leaders as “the best contract offer in decades.”

The union representing hundreds of nurses at Rady Children’s Hospital said Thursday that its members intend to strike for five days starting Aug. 19. The 10-day notice comes after another round of negotiations with the hospital failed Thursday and the nurses’ union rejecting the third tentative contract deal earlier this week.

The nurses had already gone on a two-day strike to show their frustration over the dispute between the hospital. NBC 7’s Jeanette Quezada has the latest.

The two sides have been negotiating since May; nurses went on strike for two days last month.

Nurses at Rady Children’s Hospital walked off the job Monday morning after rejecting the latest contract offer from the hospital.

Rady Children’s Hospital presented its final contract offer, and union negotiators felt it was unacceptable. The strike is expected to start on Monday, July 22, and last 48 hours.

The union that represents more than 1,500 nurses at Rady Children’s Hospital said it rejected the hospital’s final offer on Wednesday, less than a week before union members are set to strike.

Nurses at Rady Children’s Hospital gave their 10-day intent to strike notice. The strike is set to start on Monday for 48 hours.

The authorization does not mean a strike will happen but the vote will allow the union to negotiate.
