New Zealand’s Parliament was briefly suspended Thursday after Maori members staged a traditional ceremonial dance to protest legislation that would reinterpret a treaty between the British and indigenous Maori.

A fake protest encampment set up for a TV shoot on a New York City college campus sparked a real reaction from pro-Palestinian activists who organized their own demonstration against the filming at a New York City college.

When the new screening process is implemented, all jail employees and contractors will be subject to random screenings for drugs and contraband.

Elected officials in New York City and Los Angeles have signaled recently that they’re open to reinstating decades-old mask bans after several tense pro-Palestinian demonstrations, where local officials say masked protesters aimed to conceal their identity.

The pro-Palestinian demonstration comes after more than a dozen protestors were arrested on June 5.

The group Climate Defiance took responsibility for the protest, wearing shirts reading “end fossil fuels.”

There have been some major developments on the campus of UC San Diego, where police in riot gear dismantled the pro-Palestinian encampment and arrested dozens. NBC 7’s Shandel Menezes has more from the downtown jail where some of the protesters were taken.

Police arrived early Monday at UC San Diego’s established “Gaza Solidarity” encampment after the chancellor said the encampment had tripled in size.

NBC 7 saw a couple dozen people camped out on Friday afternoon. A rabbi led a peace vigil not far from the camp on Friday evening. Students and faculty of all faiths were invited to attend.

There have been weeks of protests, encampments and the occupation of an administration building at Columbia that led to a police response and mass arrests.

So far, it has been pretty peaceful, with a noticeable lack of volatility. NBC 7’s Todd Strain takes a closer look at the action at UC San Diego’s campus on May 2, 2024.

New York police officers arrived at Columbia University shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday night to clear protesters barricaded inside Hamilton Hall.

Counter-protesters in support of Israel were also seen at San Diego State on Tuesday.

A group with Students for Justice in Palestine at San Diego State University organized a walkout Tuesday to call for SDSU to divest from companies advancing Israel’s military efforts in Gaza, joining efforts of young people at other universities and colleges across the U.S.

Student demonstrations over the Israel-Hamas war have popped up at many college campuses after being inspired by demonstrators at Columbia University, including at San Diego State University.
