San Diego Named No. 5 City for Food Lovers in US: Yelp

San Diego’s thriving dining scene is a big draw for foodies who, according to Yelp, rank it the No. 5 'U.S. Destination for Food Lovers'

San Diego has long been known for its breathtaking beaches and powerhouse craft brewing scene but, now, America’s Finest City is also ranking high among foodies.

On Tuesday, Yelp released a list of the “Top U.S. Destinations for Food Lovers” and San Diego snagged the No. 5 spot.

According to the list, San Diego’s current lineup of top-notch restaurants makes the city a draw among food enthusiasts. A couple of standout dishes – according to Yelp – include the Pork Belly Benedict at Werewolf in downtown San Diego, the Kimchi Dumpling Hot Soup at TastyPot in Kearny Mesa, and the Hot Chicken at Common Stock in Hillcrest.

Yelp said its data team put together the list by comparing cities' new restaurants and looking at ratings and reviews by Yelp users. Other factors that contributed to the rankings included cuisine diversity and the percentage of food photos tied to a city, which, according to Yelp, “reveal where Yelpers love to eat right now.”

Other foodie cities across the country that made the cut include, in order:

  1. San Francisco
  2. St. Louis
  3. Honolulu
  4. Plano, Texas
  5. San Diego
  6. Las Vegas
  7. Richmond, Virginia
  8. Pittsburgh
  9. Baltimore
  10. Austin, Texas

By the way, this is the second such list in recent weeks to spotlight San Diego as a top destination for travelers. Last month, Forbes Travel Guide ranked San Diego among its “14 Top Destinations List,” which highlighted cities currently “experiencing a shift.”

The Forbes Travel Guide list said a major highlight for San Diego was its rise as an up-and-coming foodie city with an influx of new eateries and noteworthy culinary talents (ahem, Claudette Zepeda-Wilkins, Brian Malarkey, Richard Blais) heading up local hotspots.
