58-Year-Old Woman Fatally Stabbed in Clairemont, Homicide Investigation Underway

A woman was found with fatal stab wounds at a house in Clairemont. Police are still investigating the case. NBC 7’s Gaby Rodriguez spoke with neighbors, who were shaken by the incident.

San Diego police homicide detectives have identified the woman killed Monday inside a Clairemont home.

Officers found Angela Burks, 58, bleeding inside a home on Mt. Putman Road at 7:16 p.m.

Outside the home in the driveway was Burks' 30-year-old son, Joseph Burks. No one else was in the home.

On Tuesday, homicide detectives confirmed Joseph Burks called 911 to report he had been injured in an assault with a knife.

Arriving officers found Angela Burks was unconscious and bleeding. Joseph Burks suffered non-life threatening wounds, police said.

The mother was taken to a trauma center, where she was pronounced dead.

Burks was a science teacher at Otay Ranch High School since the school opened in 2003, the Sweetwater Union High School District said.

In a statement, the district said:

"Otay Ranch High and the entire Sweetwater Union High School District are deeply saddened by the loss of Angela Burks. Ms. Burks was a dedicated science teacher who served the students of South County for nearly 35 years, including her time at Otay Ranch High since its opening in 2003. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this very difficult time."

Support is being provided for students and staff affected by Burks' death, the district said.

The son will be arrested on suspicion of murder when he is released from care, police said.

Neighbors told NBC 7 it was a very chaotic scene.

"They (emergency crews) brought the person out on the stretcher. They were all bloody. They put the guy who was on his hands and his knees into the cop car and he had blood all over his arms," said neighbor Chris Evans.

Homicide detectives confirmed to NBC 7 they are not looking for any other suspects.
