Woman Killed, 3 Others Injured in La Jolla Drive-By Shooting

A woman was killed and three people were wounded in a drive-by shooting at a La Jolla house party Sunday, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The four victims were standing outside of a home on Cuvier Street at 12:30 a.m. when a light-colored car pulled up and a suspect opened fire, police confirmed.

"We were awoken to what sounded like a car backfiring," said Michelle Carcel, who lives right above where the party happened.

SDPD officers responded to the scene and found a 20-year-old woman, later identified as Nina Silver, with gunshot wounds to her upper body. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died.

A woman was killed and three people were wounded in a drive-by shooting at a La Jolla house party. NBC 7's Danica McAdam has the story.

A Poway Unified School District official confirmed Silver was a 2017 graduate of Poway High School.

β€œThis happens in every community, and it’s always tragic when it happens,” said Amie Zamudio, who lives in La Jolla. β€œWe need to realize that yes, we live here in La Jolla, but this is happening all over San Diego, and we need to be compassionate.”

A 23-year-old man and two 19-year-old men were also taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds to their upper bodies, SDPD Lt. Anthony Dupree told NBC 7. The 23-year-old remains in serious condition.

β€œLaw and order -- I want that. I don’t want this happening in my neighborhood,” said resident Steve Edwards. β€œIt is a terrible thing.”

Pearl Street, which intersects Cuvier Street, was closed as SDPD continued to investigate.

Edwards told NBC 7 he had difficulties getting to church due to the road closures and detoured bus routes.

Officers did not release a description of the alleged shooter, though SDPD said the car may have been a light-colored sedan.

Police stopped a vehicle in Torrey Pines to question potential suspects, SDPD told NBC 7.

Silver's sister created a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of her funeral services. Within 24 hours, more than $2,600 was raised.
