Wife: Slain Barona Boss Upset About Firings

Investigators say suspect was former employee

The wife of the casino gaming commissioner killed by a former employee said her husband was about to leave his job because he didn't like being ordered to fire people.

Raymundo Casillas Jr., the head of the Barona Gaming Commission in San Diego County, was killed Tuesday when Donnell Roberts went to his office and opened fire, then turned the gun on himself.

Casillas' wife, Julie, said her husband didn't want to fire Roberts from his job as a commission investigator and thought he deserved better. Fellow commission investigator Rodel Rodriguez, who was fired the day before the shooting, says Roberts was forced to resign because he had relationships with at least two women who worked at the Barona casino.

Earlier this week, law enforcement sources said that Roberts was angry he had been passed up for another job at a different casino and blamed it on his former boss because he allegedly gave Roberts a bad performance review.

Gaming commissioner Kathryn Clenney said Casillas was not asked to terminate anyone without due process.
