Water Service Restored After Pipe Bursts in University City

NBC 7’s Omari Fleming has the latest on a water main break in University City that has left approximately 600 people without water and flooded the road, blocking traffic.

Water service has been restored to hundreds of customers in the University City area following a break in a recycled pipeline and a water main.

Water flooded Regents Road when a 10-inch pipe used for recycled water broke around 4:30 p.m. near the intersections of Nobel Drive and Regents Road.

While working on repairs to the recycled water pipeline, Arian Collins, a spokesman for the City of San Diego said crews discovered a leak on a nearby 16-inch concrete water main.

A SigAlert was issued for Regents Road from Mahaila Avenue to just past La Jolla Village Drive next to UTC Westfield mall.

City of San Diego Public Utilities Department crews worked late into the night, digging into the ground and siphoning out water to make repairs.

The Jamiesons were among the unspecified number of families in University City without water after city workers shut it off to repair the break.

An inconvenience for the Jamieson's

"I've got dishes to wash and laundry. A doctor appointment tomorrow and my husband works out in the morning. He's got to have a shower," said Martha Jamieson.

Pat Sheely, who is a contractor, came out of his nearby condominium to see the damage. He said his concern is what's bubbling beneath Regents Road.

"I'd be worried about a sinkhole because you see the water is dirty. It's not dirty in the pipe, so as it's coming out it's bringing dirt with it," Sheely said.

The cause of the break was unknown.

Collins said water service was restored just before 7 a.m. Tuesday after the water main was repaired.

The recycled water pipe has not yet been repaired. Crews hope to have it back in service by the end of the day.
