Massive Geyser Floods Escondido Intersection, Causes Sinkhole

NBC 7’s Audra Stafford talks with neighbors regarding the water main break on Chestnut Drive.

A water main broke Monday, creating a massive geyser and a sinkhole.

The broken pipe released water high into the air at Chestnut Drive and Chestnut Street near 10th Avenue.

The geyser was visible from several blocks away when it was first reported just after 3:30 a.m.

The water was hitting power lines so San Diego Gas & Electric crews turned off power to nearby customers as a precaution.

The water was capped around 5 a.m. but not completely shut off because the dirty water would've been sucked back into the pipe, officials said.

Escondido police issued a SigAlert for the area.

It may take several hours to fix the broken pipe and restore water service to the neighborhood.
