Brush fire on MCAS Miramar stopped at 12 acres

A brush fire ignited at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Monday around 2:20 p.m., sending smoke into the sky that could be seen from as far south as North Park and on nearby freeways.

A brush fire ignited at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on Monday around 2:20 p.m., sending smoke into the sky that could be seen from as far south as North Park and on nearby freeways.

By around 3:50 p.m., firefighters had put the fire out and stopped its spread at about 12 acres.

NBC 7's SkyRanger 7 was over the fire which showed red flames burning brush near the airfield located south of the runways on the base.

Firefighting helicopters from San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department could be seen picking up water from nearby reservoirs to put out the flames.
