WATCH: Aztecs Advance on Walkoff Grand Slam

SDSU takes must-win game, keeps season alive

The 2016 season has not been kind to the San Diego State baseball program. SDSU finished a dismal 20-36. However, this time of year, the Aztecs always seem to have some kind of magic.

In the play-in game of the Mountain West Conference baseball tournament the Aztecs pulled another rabbit out of their hat. They went to the bottom of the 9th inning trailing San Jose State 3-2. If they failed to score a run, their season would be over.

Spencer Thornton led off the inning with a walk and scored two batters later on a Jordan Verdon single to tie it up. A pair of walks loaded the bases for Justin Wylie. The sophomore was the right guy in the right place at the right time. The Aztecs RBI leader ripped a 3-1 pitch over the left field wall for a walkoff grand slam.

The Aztecs win 7-3, earning a spot in the double-elimination tournament. SDSU will face Nevada, the #3 seed, at 6:00 Wednesday night. The Wolfpack probably didn’t want to see San Diego State sneak in to the field. The Aztecs have won the last three MWC Baseball Tournament titles.
