The San Diego Police Department said in a statement that they have spent more than $2.4 million to maintain order and safety at the Occupy San Diego movement since it began on Oct. 7.
There is roughly $144,000 worth of overtime expenses included in that amount, according to SDPD. The hours of the chiefs and Central Division captain were not included in the amount. Officers from the San Diego Sheriff’s Department that assisted in the late night sweets on Oct. 28 and Nov. 16 were also not included in the total.
“These figures are for the personnel expenses of the police officers, sergeants and lieutenants that have worked the ‘Occupy’ assignments,” SDPD explained in a statement.
Police said the average daily cost is nearly $57,000, which accounts for 20 officers for 10-hour shifts and two sergeants at 10 hours each for three shifts.
“We are doing what we believe is necessary to maintain a peaceful protest," said press secretary for Mayor Jerry Sanders.
He said the protesters have a constitutional right to free speech and to be there. The city has to enforce the law and keep the area safe and clean.
Pudgil also confirms the city has spent more than $4,000 to have the area power washed twice by a contractor after they came and moved the protesters.
