Measure B: No-Fee Trash Pickup Could be Coming to an End for San Diego Homeowners

Measure B: No-Fee Trash Pickup Could be Coming to an End for San Diego Homeowners

NBC 7’s Amber Frias explains what will happen in Measure B passes.

San Diego homeowners could soon be facing a new squeeze. The ballot measure that would allow the city to charge more homeowners a fee for trash pick-up now looks like it will pass.

The county’s registrar of voters estimates there are still 15,000 votes to be counted but so far Measure B has received 200,615 “yes” votes and 197,725 “no” votes which translates to 50.36% in support and 49.64% against.

“I'm excited for the city of San Diego, you know,” said Sean Elo-Rivera, San Diego City Council president. “This was the first step in allowing San Diego to have a more responsible, sustainable, and fair trash system.”

Elo-Rivera who has been pushing for its passage says Measure B would end free trash pickup for single-family homeowners. Meanwhile, those living in apartments or condos had to pay for trash service. Opponents disagree.

Incumbent Mike Levin (L) and Brian Maryott (R) race for the 49th Congressional District.

Despite a swing of power in the U.S. House of Representatives, a Democrat will hold on to his seat in the contested 49th Congressional District.

Candidate Brian Maryott conceded the race to incumbent Mike Levin on Thursday. With about 15,000 votes left to be tallied, Levin led the race by about 14,000 votes. NBC News called the race for Levin with the latest vote dump from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters Wednesday night.

"Last night I spoke with @mikelevin and congratulated him on his hard fought and successful re-election campaign," Maryott wrote in a statement on Twitter. "He was very gracious in victory. I also want to extend my best wishes to Mike's family, staff, and volunteers. Congratulations all... #CA49."

Maryott, who also lost to Levin in 2020, is a former certified financial planner and mayor of San Juan Capistrano. Levin will begin his third congressional term in Jan. 2023.

San Diego Ballot Measures Remain Too Close to Call

San Diego Ballot Measures Remain Too Close to Call

NBC 7’s Amber Frias takes a look at how San Diego voters feel about Measure B and Measure C.

San Diegans headed home from the polls Tuesday, but with vote counting still ongoing on Wednesday, there are some races that are still too close to call, including the city of San Diego's Measures B and C.

Measure C would remove the 30-foot coastal height limit for buildings in the Midway District.

“This is the catalyst we’ve been looking for to transform the Sports Arena and wider Midway community as well,” said Dike Anyiwo, Midway Pacific Highway Community Planning Group chair.

Supporters of Measure C say the measure would create affordable housing and jobs and modernize the Sports Arena. Opponents, however, argue removing the height limit could lead to traffic congestion in the area and block coastal views.

Election Results: Here's Who is Ahead in Races for San Diego City Council Districts 2, 4, 6 and 8

Here’s a look at early results in districts 2, 4, 6 and 8.

With early votes tallied for the San Diego City Council seats up for grabs in the 2022 General Election, it appears the ostensibly non-partisan council will be entirely represented by democrats for the first time in city history.

The San Diego Registrar's Office said approximately 500,000 votes are still left to be tallied and the votes won't be officially certified until Dec. 8. With that in mind, here's a look at early results in districts 2, 4, 6 and 8.

Jennifer Campbell jumped out to an early lead over Linda Lukacs in the race for San Diego City Council District 2. With another batch of votes reported Friday evening by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters Office, Campbell was holding strong with 55% of the vote.

"I feel great. I'm really glad. I'm very happy. I really just wanted to serve my constituency and continue going. We've done a lot of big things for this city and for District 2 and we want to keep going, helping our city and our district go forward," Campbell told NBC 7 on election night.

How does your vote get counted? Go behind the scenes at the San Diego County Registrar of Voters

With false claims of voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election, a lack of trust is not something the San Diego County Registrar of Voters Cynthia Paes avoids talking about. She wants San Diegans to know, and have confidence in, the ballot-counting process. NBC 7’s Dana Williams gets an inside look.

More than 300,000 voters have cast their ballots in San Diego County, according to Cynthia Paes, the Registrar of Voters (ROV). This number is a mix of people who have voted either in-person or by mail.

In California, all active registered voters receive a mail-in ballot from their county elections officials. However, there are concerns with the integrity of the mail-in process.

This lack of trust is not something that Cynthia Paes, the Registrar of Voters (ROV), is not afraid to acknowledge. She wants San Diegans to know, and have confidence in, the ballot-counting process.

In 2022, Paes gave NBC 7 an inside look at the process that each ballot goes through once they have been dropped off at one of the more than 100 locations across the county and they are received at the ROV office.

Californians Approve Big Funding Boost for Arts Education

California voters on Tuesday approved a ballot measure backed by a celebrity lineup that included Barbra Streisand and Los Angeles-born rappers will.i.am and Dr. Dre that could pump as much as $1 billion a year from the state’s general fund into arts education.

The measure had faced no organized opposition, a rarity. With about a quarter of the ballots counted, Proposition 28 won handily with 75.8% of the vote. It will require the state to provide the equivalent of 1% of California’s state funding for public schools from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade for the arts.

Supporters said it would benefit public school programs that go beyond the traditional art, theater, dance and music classes to include graphic design, computer coding, animation, music composition and script writing.

Despite California's vibrant arts and music scene that has given the world everything from Hollywood to surf rock, fewer than a quarter of its public schools have a full-time arts or music education teacher, and some schools offer no such classes at all.

Sports Gambling Measures Look Like Losing Bets in California

Competing measures to allow sports gambling in California looked like losing bets Tuesday after the most expensive ballot initiative campaign in U.S. history.

A proposition that would allow online and mobile sports betting was failing by nearly a 3-to-1 margin in early returns and another measure that would allow sports wagering at Native American casinos and horse tracks was trailing by about 30 percentage points.

The gaming industry and Native American tribes raised nearly $600 million to capture a piece of a potential billion dollar market in the nation’s most populous state.

Californians were inundated with a blast of advertisements — much of it from backers of the two measures attacking the competing one.

Voters Approve California Law Banning Flavored Tobacco

Californians on Tuesday voted to allow a law banning flavored tobacco products such as menthol cigarettes and strawberry gummy vaping juice to go into effect.

With about a quarter of the ballots counted, Proposition 31 won handily with 76.5% of the vote.

A campaign funded by tobacco giants, including R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Philip Morris USA, had effectively blocked the law passed two years ago. The $20 million campaign gathered enough signatures to put the issue on the statewide ballot.

Supporters of the ban, who included doctors, child welfare advocates and the state’s dominant Democratic Party, said the law was necessary to put a stop to the staggering rise in teen smoking.

San Diego County has seven representatives in the California State Assembly and all are up for election this year. Here's a breakdown of the races and where the election results stand, so far:

On Friday, Democrat Chris Duncan, who is currently San Clemente Mayor Pro Tem, has a slight lead over Republican Laurie Davies, who currently represents Assembly District 73.

As of Friday, incumbent Marie Waldron, a Republican, had reason to hope she would be holding on to her seat against Randy Vopel, a Republican who in the past was an Assemblymember of California's 71st District.

The race for the 76th, which spans northern San Diego and parts of North County, including Poway, was also still close on Friday.

Chula Vista: Deceased City Attorney Candidate Holds Modest Lead in Early Returns

Silva for City AttorneyMan in a suit

Simon Silva got the most votes for Chula Vista City Attorney in the June Primary.

Simon Silva died Sep. 3 surrounded by his wife and two daughters.

On Friday, Silva was leading the race for Chula Vista City Attorney, besting his opponent, Dan Smith, by 301votes, with thousands of ballots still expected to be counted.

Especially noteworthy regarding the race: The current leader is deceased. At this point, with only preliminary returns in, of course, it's far too early to declare a winner.

Last month, the Chula Vista City Council honored Silva, a deputy city attorney who died after a battle with cancer.
