New Year's Eve weather in San Diego: Colder temperatures with a chance of drizzle

It's gonna be a drizzly start to the new year

NBC Universal, Inc.

New Year's Eve in San Diego is expected to look mostly dry, with a chance for a few stray showers lingering from Saturday.

"We cannot rule out a stray shower here and there through the morning hours [on Sunday]," NBC 7 meteorologist Francella Perez said Saturday night.

Sunday is expected to be a cool day with high temperatures around 5 degrees below normal seasonal temperatures. The coasts and valleys will stay in the mid-60s, mountain folks will feel temperatures near 50 and mid-60s for desert dwellers.

Basically, if you're heading out for New Year's Eve, throw on something warm and if possible, pick water-resistant shoes. Even if the showers are gone, puddles will likely persist.

A bout of high surf has been hitting San Diego's coast and will continue into early next week, bringing chances of coastal flooding in low-lying areas of town. Sunday's waves won't be as high as Saturday's, but we will still see some waves between 5-8 feet with some sets up to 12 feet.

Don't put the rain boots away just yet. Although rain chances lessen on Sunday, there's another chance of rain next week — the first week of 2024 — according to the National Weather Service of San Diego.

"Light rain showers could occur Monday with best chances over southern San Diego County," NWS San Diego said on X, formerly twitter. "Rainfall amounts, if any, will be 1/10" or less."
