A trash truck driver dumped his trash load into the parking lot of a church in Tierrasanta Wednesday after he smelled smoke while making rounds at a nearby apartment complex.
According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD), the fire was reported around 4:35 p.m. on Villarrica Way and Antigua Boulevard in the parking lot of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Bishop Jim Korican told NBC 7, the driver had been picking up trash at the apartment complex close to the church when he smelled the smoke. He drove into the church's parking lot and dumped the load.
“Good thinking. It was better than dumping it out on the streets and causing more of a havoc out there," Korican said.
The driver did stay at the scene.
The fire was mostly knocked down as of 5 p.m., according to SDFD officials.
“We’re understanding," Korican added, referring to the mess left behind after the fire was put out. "We’re gonna clean it all up.”

He added that it was fortunate the parking lot was empty at the time.
