Rancho Bernardo HS Baseball Coach Gets His Job Back

Days after Coach Sam Blalock was mysteriously asked to resign, he is once again employed by RBHS

The baseball coach at Rancho Bernardo High School baseball has his job back.

Sam Blalock, RBHS' coach for 19 years, was notified Wednesday he would need to resign or be fired.

The school’s principal Paul Robinson gave the information to Blalock but the order apparently came from Superintendent John Collins.

Four days after the alleged confrontation, Poway Unified School District issued a statement that Robinson “notified … Blalock that he would not be brought back as coach for the 2012 season.”

Blalock, who had been out of town on vacation when the news broke of his termination, returned to San Diego Tuesday and met with Collins, Robinson and RB Athletic Director Peggy Brose.

After that meeting, Blalock told NBCSanDiego that he had his job back.

Blalock taught and coached in Poway Unified School District for 40 years. He helped lead the baseball team to several CIF championships and was generally well-loved. In 2007, he retired from teaching but remained the coach of the RB baseball team.

He has the most wins of any baseball coach in the county with 784 wins over his career.

Students and baseball players spent the weekend gathering support. They created an online petition and a Facebook group supporting their coach.

In a response to critics, Collins issued a statement Saturday night saying, "The timing of this was not the best."

The statement continued, “I look forward to an open dialog, to better understand exactly what transpired on Wednesday, to look at potential options, and to reach a satisfactory resolution.”
