A father-to-be was killed and a second victim was seriously injured after a late night shooting in City Heights Saturday evening, San Diego Police said.
Angel Sanabria, 26, has been identified as the man killed after witnesses reported hearing shots fired after 7 p.m. on the 3200 block of 44th Street, police said.
“There has to be justice for us, because our family is not going to be able to sleep,” Pricilla Carrillo, Sanabria’s cousin tells NBC 7. “He was going to be a father, me and him were going to be due around the same time so to know that I had that connection with him he was very caring, he was strong for himself, he always wanted a better future for himself and now that he was going to have this child everything was going to change."
A second victim, a 29-year-old man who has not been identified, is being treated for his wounds. He is expected to survive.
Police said Sanabria and the 29-year-old were in a City Heights alley when they were approached by two suspects; both suspects fired off shots.
Nearby residents described what they heard when the incident unfolded.
"I was in my room and I heard gunshots, they were kind of loud and it was like five, I think,” 13-year-old neighbor Klarissa Barrientos told NBC 7. “I was scared because like, this has never happened here and like I'm afraid it's going to happen again, maybe."
When officers arrived on scene, they found a trail of blood and evidence of gunshots, but no victim.
Shortly after they arrived on scene, authorities got calls from a local hospital about possible victims injured, but initially, officers were not sure if the victims were related to the shootings.
Police later learned someone had taken Sanabria to UC San Diego Medical Center. Doctors attempted life-saving measures, but Sanabria was pronounced dead at the hospital.
