A man who may have been having a mental health crisis was shot and killed by police after he was threatening officers with a knife, the San Diego County Sheriff's said.
The San Diego Police Department officers initially received a 911 call around 6:50 p.m. from someone who said their roommate had attempted suicide at an apartment complex on E. Street, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the incident.
Once officers arrived on scene, they safely escorted six people out of the apartment and confronted the individual who was holding a knife and threatening officers, SDSO Lt. Michael Krugh said. Officers ordered the person to drop the knife and that is when the shooting occurred, Krugh said.

The person was taken to a hospital but was later pronounced dead, Krugh confirmed. No officers were injured in the incident.
SDSO identified both of the officers involved as being employed by the San Diego Police Department for four and half years and were assigned to patrol the Central Division.
Per a countywide protocol that prevents law enforcement agencies from conducting investigations into weapon-deployments involving their own officers, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved shooting investigation.
