Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Truck in Alpine

An elderly man was killed after being struck by a truck in Alpine Thursday afternoon.

The crash occurred at 4:12 p.m. on the 1200 block of Tavern Road near Alpine Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

This was not a hit-and-run, officials said.

The driver of a white pick-up truck was pulling into a bank parking lot and was waiting for a car to park. The driver put the truck in reverse to give the other car more room but did not see the victim standing behind his vehicle, CHP said.

The victim, a man in his mid-80s, was pinned underneath the truck.

Witnesses told NBC 7, they heard screams from people that a man was under the truck.

"I went to the car on the side because I know CPR, and I thought I could do something. But the moment I went on the side of the car, his legs were stuck under the engine," said Martin Loya, who works nearby.

"The driver was crying next to the person," witness Brandon Martinez said. "Reaching for him, trying to help him out,--aking sure he wasn't passing away but it happened."

Emergency crews lifted the truck to get the victim out. He died at the scene, CHP said.

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the crash.
