The last time the Padres swept the Dodgers in a doubleheader was June 17, 1988, at Dodger Stadium. Granted, these days teams very rarely play doubleheaders but given the discrepancy in these teams’ current records this is a big deal.
San Diego beat L.A. 7-2 in the nightcap of their double dip, a nice chaser to the afternoon’s 6-5 walkoff win. The Dodgers staked high-priced starter Yu Darvish to a 2-1 lead but he could not hold it.
In the 3rd inning Darvish served up a solo home run to rookie Carlos Asuaje that tied the game 2-2. It was the start of a very long inning for Darvish. Shortstop Erick Aybar followed with a single, one of his three hits in the game. Then Cory Spangenberg singled to move Aybar to 3rd base, followed by a single by Hector Sanchez that brought in Aybar for a 3-2 Padres lead. Sanchez drove in a pair of runs and scored two more. He was starting at 1st base to give Wil Myers a breather, which was interesting timing because Saturday night was Wil Myers bobblehead night.
Matt Szczur added a 2-run double to complete the 4-run inning and the Padres never looked back. In the 7th inning Yangervis Solarte and Jose Pirela added RBI singles to further pad the lead. The Padres can take the 4-game series on Sunday afternoon behind Jhoulys Chacin, who gets the start against Alex Wood.
