Carlsbad Police blocked off a neighborhood and urged residents to shelter indoors after one person was injured by gunfire coming from the brush off Avenida Soledad.

Police blocked off more than a mile of Rancho Santa Fe Road from northbound Camino Junipero to southbound Melrose Drive just before midnight. SWAT officers searched the area and a reverse 911 call went out advising residents to stay in their homes.

According to the North Comm Fire Department, a person walked into the emergency room at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas at approximately 11:30 p.m. with a gunshot wound. Since the hospital does not have a trauma center, the individual was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital.

The victim, described as a 45-year-old male from San Marcos, suffered a gunshot wound to the side according to police.

It is unknown what type of weapon was used. It was possibly a long gun or rifle, according to a police statement.

Investigators told NBC 7 it does not appear to be a random shooting. They are gathering evidence and have not released a suspect description. No arrests have been made.
