Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) is offering COVID-19 vaccines to individuals 65 or older and healthcare workers under the county's Phase 1A on Saturday with no appointments necessary.
FHCSD received 1,000 COVID-19 vaccines through the county at their location at 823 Gateway Center Way. As of 11 a.m., they had only given out 200 vaccines, said Anthony White with FHCSD.
On Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., no appointments will be necessary at the walk-in location. Face coverings are required at all times and an ID to verify age. The vaccine is free of charge.
"They really were organized and we just flowed through like water. It took longer to fill out the papers then it did to actually go through the motions and get the shot and everything that’s how good it was," said Bart James, a resident who got vaccinated at the site.
White told NBC 7 most of the people served by the clinic are low income, underserved community members, and minorities. Many are also essential workers with low paying jobs. And a portion live in multi-generational households or two family households where quarantining is a challenge.
"So 1 out of 3 people coming to us from the community we serve, were testing positive for COVID-19," White said. "So we know it’s important. These are populations that are more affected by COVID-19 than the general population. They have a higher risk of dying from the disease or severe illness so, we want to make sure to get these people vaccinated."
No information was provided if they were to continue the no appointment vaccines on Sunday.
