A mother was killed and a toddler was seriously injured when two cars crashed on a Mira Mesa roadway Friday, police said.
The woman was identified Saturday as Judy Suong-Tuyet Bui.
The San Diego Police Department responded to the crash at the intersection of Calle Cristobal and Caminito Propico near Lopez Ridge Park at about 7 a.m.
The 26-year-old mother was turning out of the Tierra Mesa neighborhood in a white car when a gray sedan traveling westbound on Calle Cristobal collided with her at the intersection, SDPD Sgt. Reuben Gutierrez said.
Bui was killed.
A restrained four-year-old was seated behind her, Gutierrez said. The toddler was pulled from the vehicle and transported to an area hospital.
The impact of the crash broke the child's pelvis, ribs and knee and fractured his skull, SDPD said. He may not survive his injuries.
Local
Friends of Bui told NBC 7 she and her family recently moved into their neighborhood, but have lived in Mira Mesa all their lives. They said the mother also had a two-year-old girl who was not in the car at the time of the crash.
The driver of the gray car was minorly injured and stayed on scene to speak with investigators.
It was not clear if one of the drivers may have run a red light, or if speed or fog were considered factors in the collision. SDPD was working to determine the cause.
Calle Cristobal was shut down and a Sig Alert was issued during a police investigation. The roadways were expected to reopen at about 11:30 a.m.
