A person was shot and killed at a Marine Corps Recruit Depot entrance gate Friday after approaching base personnel with a knife in a hostile intent, Marine officials said.
Just before noon, a vehicle attempted to enter the base at the gate 5 entrance. Base personnel asked the person to stop the vehicle. The person then got out of the vehicle with a knife and approached the personnel with "hostile intent."
After several warnings, the person was shot. An ambulance was called and the individual was later pronounced dead at the scene, said 1st Lt. Joshua Collins with MCRD.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the incident. They released the following statement:
"Out of respect for the ongoing investigative process, at this time we are not able to provide additional details.”
A dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee was left at the scene and appeared to be the main focal point of the investigation.

The depot is near San Diego International Airport. Gate 5 is used for visitors. It has security kiosks under a metal awning.
