Man Barricaded in Apartment, Area Evacuated

A man who barricaded himself inside his Fallbrook apartment and prompted the evacuation of dozens of units, was taken into custody just before midnight.

North County Fire Protection District crews received a report of an injured person at 800 E. Alvarado Street at about 5:15 p.m.

They found a man inside his apartment who had flooded the unit with natural gas from the stove and was threatening to light the apartment on fire, officials said.

San Diego County Sheriff's deputies and negotiators were called to the scene.

As a precaution, 75 people were told to leave their homes. Many spent part of the night at a nearby church.

Just before midnight, deputies entered the man's apartment and found him hiding behind furniture.

They say that when they attempted to take him into custody the man resisted arrest.

An official news release stated that force was used to gain control of the man.

He was later evaluated by on-scene paramedics and then transported to Tri-City Hospital where he was placed on a 72-hour mental health evaluation hold.
