Local Schools Vie for $20,000

Three local schools are vying to win $20,000 in cash prizes from the retail giant Big Lots, during their 4th annual Lots2Give contest.

Schools from around the country including three local schools, Vista Academy of Visual and Performing Arts in Vista, Montgomery High School, and the San Diego High School-School of Business, submitted 90 seconds videos explaining why their school needs the money.

The winning video will receive a $20,000 grand prize. The winners will be selected by the general public. Starting on June 6, people will be able to log on to www.biglots.com/lots2give and cast a vote for their favorite school.
Voting starts on June 6 and ends July 4, 2011. The winners will be announced on August 13, 2011.

One $20,000 grand prize, four $5,000 first prizes and 30 $2,000 second prizes will be awarded, the company said.

Big Lots also is collecting donations from its customers in the region to donate to seven schools in the San Diego area, including the three schools in the video contest, Mission Vista High School in Oceanside, Chula Vista Middle School, Granger Junior High School in National City, and Otay Ranch High School. The company says customers can donate $1 or $5 at participating stores in their area, all of which will be split between the seven schools.
