After returning to his hometown in July, Kawhi Leonard wasted little time giving back to the community where he grew up.
The former San Diego State star gave a gift of one million backpacks, enough to supply every student in the Moreno Valley Unified, Inglewood Unified, and Los Angeles Unified School Districs. Leonard grew up in Moreno Valley, and returned to Cloverdale Elementary to make the announcement.
Leonard partnered with the Clippers Foundation and non-profit Baby2Baby to make the contribution.
“Going to the NBA this is what I wanted to do, I wanted to be able to give back to my community," Leonard said. "That's why I'm so happy to be back home. I'm able to be hands on in the community where I grew up, and where it started for me."
Kawhi's donation will help provide for kids from low-income households. Last year in the Los Angeles Unified School District 80 percent of students came from low-income families, were homeless, or are in a foster program.
