Kaaboo, the five-year old music festival that called the Del Mar Fairgrounds and Thoroughbred Club home, is moving south next year to the East Village.
The news was released Sunday night while tens of thousands of local music fans were in Del Mar at the 2019 incarnation of the festival to see the Mumford & Sons and other acts.
The impending move will give Kaaboo a chance to spread out at Petco Park, the Park at the Park and surrounding areas -- and will give fans a chance to attend via public transportation, something that was seriously lacking during its stint at Del Mar.
"As the Kaaboo brand and our live event properties continue to grow and evolve, it’s imperative that we continue to deliver an unparalleled experience for our guests by holding Kaaboo in a world-class venue with exceptional room for growth,” Kaaboo managing partner Jason Felts said in a press release.
Kaaboo officials also said they would be rebranding the local festival as Kaaboo San Diego, an acknowledgement that the Kaaboo name is now attached to festivals in Texas and elsewhere.
Next year's event is slated for Sept. 18-20 and will presumably compete for festival dollars with the newly minted Wonderfront Festival, which will take place Nov. 22-24 -- if Wonderfront returns for a second year.
Kaaboo organizers, who stressed that music fans would continue to be treated to a "world-class musical lineup and hilarious comedians," announced ticket prices for next year on Sunday as well (available at KaabooSD.com): Festivalgoers will pay $199 for a basic weekend wristband, with VIP passes going for $799 and, for top-tier buyers, a hefty $2,999.
