Homicide detectives investigating shooting in Ramona

NBC Universal, Inc.

NBC 7’s Dave Summers heard from neighbors worried about a possible killer on the loose.

A homicide investigation kicked off Tuesday night in Ramona after residents reported hearing gunshots and a man yelling for help, the San Diego Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies were called to State Route 78 and Haverford Road around 11:30 p.m. and told NBC 7 they found a victim inside a maroon Ford pickup truck with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to a hospital where he eventually died.

Deputies said there are no other victims and the circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation. Investigators did not have a suspect description.

The thought that a killer could be on the loose worries some residents nearby.

"The only thing I heard were the gunshots," said a woman who didn't want to be identified. "To me, it sounded like one [shot] and then just rapid [fire]."

She said she ducked down to the ground when she heard the shots rattle off.

Motion-activated security cameras at a dog rescue property near the shooting picked up the sound of shots.

"Sounds like somebody shot the guy in the F-150 and then took off. That's kind of my gauge," said David Klein, a volunteer at the rescue. "I just worry about the Ramona residents around here who are volunteers because we're all here every day with the dogs."
