Fast-Attack Sub to Call San Diego ‘Home'

The fast-attack submarine USS San Francisco has left for its new homeport in San Diego after nearly 3½ years of repairs at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

The Los Angeles-class nuclear sub smashed full speed into an underwater mountain near Guam in January 2005, killing one sailor and injuring 97 of its 137 crew members. In September 2005, it arrived in Bremerton, where shipyard workers replaced its bow with the nose from the submarine USS Honolulu, which was being decommissioned. The work cost $134 million.

Navy spokesman Lt. Kyle Raines says the sub left the shipyard Tuesday morning, pausing briefly in Bremerton's harbor to test some onboard systems.
