Police in La Jolla found a dolphin stranded in a drainage ditch early Thursday morning.
At about 6 a.m., an officer with the San Diego Police Department called to inform lifeguards of a possibly deceased dolphin in a drainage ditch about 50 yards north of Scripps Pier.
Lifeguards searched the area and found the dolphin.
The animal had no visible injuries, but lifeguards did not know why it died.
They said the occurrence is not terribly unusual -- it could have been stranded or sick.
