A pedestrian walking along an unmarked crossing on El Cajon Boulevard was hit by a car Friday, prompting police to temporarily block off surrounding roads in the busy Rolando thoroughfare.
The collision happened just after 12:35 p.m. on El Cajon Boulevard near 71st Street.
The San Diego Police Department said a 68-year-old pedestrian was walking northbound crossing at the intersection of 7000 El Cajon Boulevard when a driver traveling eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard struck the pedestrian.
Alec Phillip, with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, said the victim was unconscious but breathing when officials arrived. The pedestrian was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital. Police said the victim’s injuries were life-threatening.
Meanwhile, the SDPD said the driver in the Honda Fit stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Police said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
At around 1:50 p.m., the San Diego Police Department posted a message on Twitter saying El Cajon Boulevard – both eastbound and westbound – was closed between 70th and 72nd streets. Southbound 71st Street was also closed from El Cajon Boulevard. Police advised motorists to use an alternate route.
By 4 p.m., police had reopened the roadways.
