A brush fire burned about a dozen acres Wednesday along Camino del Sur north of Rancho Penasquitos.
First reports estimated about half an acre burning but that was updated around 9:40 with reports of 12 acres scorched.
Helicopters made about 40 water drops San Diego Fire Rescue spokesperson Maurice Luque said.
With current winds and increased fire danger, the fire could have spread to about 20 acres and threatened homes.
Fire crews were able to get a handle of it quickly Luque said.
San Diego County is under a red flag warning with strong gusts of wind from the east forecasted for Wednesday. The warning was extended to 6 p.m.
Weather in the area will be a challenge to firefighting efforts, according to NBC 7 San Diego's Jodi Kodesh. Temperatures had reached 71 degrees at the time of the fire and were expected to rise through the day. Humidity was at a low 11 percent, and dry wind was blowing at 6 miles per hour with expected increases as well.

No structures were threatened. There was light fuel with a moderate rate of spread.
The community nearby is Del Sur according to firefighters. The nearest cross street was Paseo del Sur.
