Man Killed Walking Into Home Invasion: Report

Brent Adam Adler, 33, was shot and killed at a home on Tommy Drive Wednesday in what police believe was an attempted home invasion

A San Diego resident shot and killed in the East County died protecting his friends from a home invasion in-progress, according to a published report.

Brent Adam Adler, 33, was shot to death outside a home in the 8500 block of Tommy Drive in the Lake Murray area Wednesday around 2:50 p.m. after what investigators believe was an attempted home invasion involving a group of as many as five suspects.

On Thursday, Adler’s sister, Ashley Adler, told KGTV her brother interrupted the suspects in the middle of the home invasion and was killed for trying to save his friends.

“When he walked in through the door he saw his two friends tied and blindfolded, so of course he was going to try to protect them,” Ashley said, fighting back tears. “I believe that’s why he got the brutal end of it.”

In a GoFundMe page to raise money to cover costs for Adler’s funeral, Ashley adds: “They were trying to take my brother with them when they were leaving and I think he got away and when he was running back to the house they shot and killed him.”

Police said the suspects demanded money from residents at the home. After Adler was fatally shot, one of his friends tried to help him until emergency crews arrived.

When officers got to the house, they discovered Adler dead on the ground in front of the home. Investigators did not have clear descriptions of the suspects, but believe the group fled in a green Ford Expedition SUV.

As of Friday morning, no arrests had been made.

Adler’s sister told KGTV her brother had spent 12 years in prison for an armed robbery he committed as a teenager, when he and his friends robbed a smoke shop.

On the fundraiser page, Ashley calls Adler a “good man and a great brother and uncle.”
