The discovery of a 68-year-old woman's body launched a death investigation Monday night near the bay in Coronado before the Medical Examiner's office determined the woman drowned accidentally.
Authorities received a call at about 7 p.m. of a body floating in the water at Glorietta Bay. There, officers located a woman's body in the water and performed life-saving measures on her until fire department personnel took over. Despite efforts to save the woman's life, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple agencies including the Coronado Police Department, Harbor Police and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene.
Police identified the deceased as 68-year-old Patricia Viola, whose family has been notified of her passing.
On Tuesday evening, the Medical Examiner's office released the preliminary results of their autopsy and found Viola's cause of death was drowning and the manner of death was accidental.

Lt. Thomas Seiver of the Homicide Unit said Viola lived on a boat in the area for an extended period of time and added that there was no missing person case that could have been linked to her death.
