The Human Rights Campaign has ranked San Diego on top of its first ever Municipal Equality Index.
The group recognized that America's Finest City has made great strides in way of gay and lesbian inclusion. HRC took into account non-discrimination laws, relationship recognition, and employment practices-- awarding San Diego with the highest score of 100.
“I wouldn't want to move anywhere else because we feel so good being here,” said same sex supporter Carley Hathaway
San Diego Councilman Todd Gloria believes our local economy will thrive if everyone feels accepted.
“If you believe in diversity, if you want and expect equality, you can find that in San Diego,” said Gloria.” San Diego has the welcome mat out for LGBT Americans, really for anyone who's supportive. That brings people to our community. That helps us all.”
Gloria also said he believes the local economy will thrive if everyone feels accepted.
Hillcrest business owners say they couldn't agree more.
“We've had a lot of great leaders that have forged our community forward and just made it a great place to come,” said Chris Shaw, owner of Urban Mo’s Bar & Grill.
Shaw said restaurateurs and other small businesses work together to create a sense of community.
Earlier this year, Hillcrest debuted a new flag and street named after gay rights activist Harvey Milk.
“It's just feels nice to be comfortable with who you are,” said local resident Lisa Fitzgerald. “And in San Diego, it's just who we are.”
