A high-ranking member of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department is the subject of a federal criminal investigation.
A spokesperson for the department said Captain Marco Garmo, who oversees the Rancho San Diego station, is on paid leave while the SDSO helps federal authorities investigate the 27-year veteran.
Investigators aren't sharing what the investigators are looking at specifically, but this isn't the first time he's faced scrutiny.
In 2017 Garmo was investigated by former District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis' office for violating the state limit on gun sales, according to the Union-Tribune.
Dumanis' office gave Garmo a warning instead of filing criminal charges. His boss, Sheriff Bill Gore, issued a formal reprimand.
Former SDSO Commander Dave Myers, who was critical of the investigation at the time and ran against Gore for Sheriff, took aim at the 2017 investigation.
He called it "a complete sham that didn't get to the heart of what Garmo was doing."
