Body Recovered From Swollen Escondido Creek

A Swift Water Rescue crew retrieved a man's body from the Escondido Creek Thursday.

The Escondido Fire Department responded to reports of a man who was kayaking in the creek near Rose Street. Firefighters couldn't find anyone when they got to the creek so they called a Swift Water Rescue team.

An EFD Batallion Chief said crews found the man stuck in a bush under rapid water in the creek. The chief said crews believed the man was dead and he was confirmed deceased after his body was recovered.

A surfboard or paddleboard was also recovered from the creek.

Dianne Dafiedler works near the site of the rescue and said she was told by coworkers there was a man kayaking in the creek.

“It’s just hard to imagine that you would go to that extreme because of flooding," she said.

The operation caused 30-minute delays to the Sprinter train service. The North County Transit District said the Escondido Police Department closed the tracks west of the transit center.

The NCTD said a bridge bus was requested to get passengers from the Escondido center to the Nordahl stop. Riders can also take BREEZE route 305 to get to Vista.
