A construction worker was fatally crushed by falling rebar in an accident at a rental car center near the San Diego International Airport Tuesday morning.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office says the 29-year-old man was climbing rebar as he prepared to pour concrete forms at the construction site, which is near the intersection of Pacific Highway at West Washington Street.
However, at 8:45 a.m., something went wrong. People nearby heard the man yelling that the rebar was collapsing, and he was soon crushed by the falling material.
Co-workers rushed to detach his safety harness from the rebar and call 911.
Paramedics tried to save the victim, but he died at the scene.
His identity has not been released, but an Airport Authority spokesperson said he worked for Austin/Sundt Joint Venture.
The companies are developing a new, $223 million consolidated rental car center at the airport, according to the Sundt website.
