Over the next five years, the Pentagon will slash the size of the military to save $50 billion.

The Pentagon is reducing the number of Navy ships and F-35 Joint Strike Fighters it will buy, and will cut six marine corps battalions.

Nearly 3,000 sailors will be let go nationwide. About 550 of them are based in Camp Pendleton. The Marines plan to drop 20,000 nationwide.

Camp Pendleton administrators said they plan to deal with the cuts through retirement and attrition.

The defense department will maintain, and possibly increase, spending in three areas:

  • Cyber security
  • Special operations forces
  • Unmanned aircrafts

President Obama's budget proposal includes billions of dollars in new spending and nearly $2 trillion in tax increases.
