Three inmates were sent to the hospital after a large fight involving approximately 20 inmates broke out at the George Bailey Detention Facility, San Diego County Sheriff's officials (SDSO) said.
The fight happened at approximately 1:09 p.m. Sunday at the facility, located east of Chula Vista, near the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility east of State Route 125.
It all began when one inmate attacked another in the dayroom, deputies said. Immediately, approximately 20 inmates began to fight one another.
Multiple deputies and supervisors responded to the scene and were initially able to stop the fight. However, the fight re-commenced as soon as deputies prepared to enter the module.
Eventually, deputies were able to end the physical altercations.
Three inmates were sent to local hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries is unknown.
The investigation is ongoing.
