NBC 7 SAN DIEGO AND NBCUNIVERSAL FOUNDATION AWARD $100,000 TO THREE LOCAL NONPROFITS IN SAN DIEGO AREA
SAN DIEGO, CA– (November 16, 2015) –NBC 7 San Diego in partnership with the NBCUniversal Foundation today announced that three San Diego area nonprofit organizations will receive a total of $100,000 as part of the 21st Century Solutions grant challenge.
In San Diego, the following organizations are the recipients of a 21st Century Solutions grant:
• Elementary Institute of Science- EIS Outpost- $50,000
Ocean and Earth Expedition Field Trips are the result of a STEM education partnership between EIS, Diamond Neighborhood teachers/schools and UC San Diego Scripps Ocean Institute's STEM researchers that deliver a compelling Next Generation Science Standard (NGSS) curriculum to local underserved students.
• Friends of The Water Conservation Garden-Ms. Smarty Plants Grows Water Wise Schools
Program-$25,000
Friends of the Water Conservation Garden work with school districts to transition landscapes by training a School Garden Champion through their “Ms. Smarty-Plants Grows Water Wise School” education program for K-12 students.
• San Diego Air & Space Museum- $25,000
The San Diego Air & Space Museum adheres preserves, interprets, educates and shares its rich aviation and space resources. BEAMPro cutting edge programs inspire an interest in science, technology, engineering, math and innovation with schools that lack transportation funding.

For the fourth consecutive year, the 21st Century Solutions grant challenge is awarding a total of $1.2 million to 30 nonprofits in 10 markets across the country served by the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, including in San Diego. Each of the stations promoted the initiative locally and created a community panel to review and select the final grant recipients. One winning organization and two runners-up are being awarded grants in each city.
The grants support impactful programs that offer bold, new ideas that move communities forward. Winners are being awarded in the following categories: Media Arts and Technology, Civic Engagement, Jobs and Economic Empowerment, Education and Environment.
