A woman whose battered body was found wrapped in a blanket has been identified by investigators.
Tammy Jo Charland, 38, was discovered Monday morning in an alley off the 3000 block of Main Street in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Monday that the woman exhibited evidence of obvious trauma.
It's not yet known if Charland was homeless at the time of her death, but she was a transient from time to time over the years, said Lt. Terry McManus of the San Diego police homicide unit. Investigators are categorizing her death as a murder. Police are still searching for a motive.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
A man noticed the body at about 7:45 a.m.
“He’s the one that actually opened the covers to see the body,” nearby resident Ana Lopez said.
The man works at a nearby welding shop and told Lopez that the victim had a lot of blood on her stomach.
“The citizen attempted to rouse the person, but when he was unsuccessful, he called 911,” Lt. Kevin Rooney said on Monday.
