Maverick is back (in San Diego).
It's been three decades since the hit movie "Top Gun" first came out, and Tom Cruise is back on the flight line to film a sequel, right here in San Diego.
The Department of Defense and U.S. Navy has confirmed to NBC San Diego that "Top Gun 2" is filming at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado all week.
"The Department of Defense and the Navy have agreed to support the production of Top Gun: Maverick. The Navy is supporting one shoot this week at Naval Air Station North Island, per a Production Assistance Agreement (PAA) signed by Paramount and the Department of Defense," a statement from the U.S. Navy read. "The PAA covers two days of shooting. Details relating to future filming, and specifics on what support the Navy will provide in support of the ongoing production, are still being worked out. "
Cruise tweeted a photo of himself as Navy pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in a flight suit, looking at a fighter jet. The photo includes the phrase "feel the need." In the original movie, Cruise's character talks about how he feels the need for speed.
Cruise writes "#Day1" of production of "Top Gun: Maverick."
