Exposure Skate has been held in Encinitas for 13 years, and for women and non-binary skateboarders, the tournament is about more than just the competition. NBC 7’s Adonis Albright reports.

California Live correspondent Angela Sun meets Olympic skateboarder Amelia Brodka, who co-founded the Encinitas-based nonprofit ‘Exposure Skate.’ The organization is changing the narrative in the male-dominated sport by providing skateboarding classes, camps and retreats for women, girls, trans and nonbinary individuals.

At age 12, the park skater was the first to ever complete the 1080 trick, which is three full revolutions. Schaar was also the youngest X Games gold medalist in 2012. His Olympic medal hung around his neck as he said that skating is just as fun now as when he started.

A group of skateboarders made their pitch to the Encinitas Parks and Recreation Board this week for the construction of a skate bowl. It would be the second in Encinitas but the first on a North County public beach.

Porter Elementary School students are learning new tricks and having fun with their friends but one group of students in San Diego’s Lincoln Park neighborhood want something more — a skate park in their own neighborhood.

Dr. Maunela Ippolito is a fifth-grade teacher at Porter Elementary who loves to skateboard. Now, she’s teaching that passion to her students, and they’re all on a bigger mission to make it easier to skate in their neighborhood.

“They are really cute; I can take it on walks and take it to the skate park.”

A touch of winter came to the Summer Games on Wednesday when the United States figure skating team finally got their gold medals as 2022 Olympic champions.
