US Marine Pens Children's Book for Military Families

A U.S. Marine helicopter pilot’s poem has been made into a children’s book to help those families with children learning to cope with a parent or loved one being deployed.

“Good Night Marines” is the creation of Maj. David R. Dixon, an AH-1W Cobra helicopter pilot who is stationed with 4th Marine Aircraft Wing in New Orleans, Louisiana.

A few years ago, Dixon and his wife wanted to start a family so they looked for books and other toys that would relate to children of Marines.

When he didn't find what he was looking for, Dixon went to work himself.

He started with a poem and then teamed up with former Disney animator Phil Jones to create a book to help the kids understand their Marine heritage.

The children’s book “Good Night Marines” is available on Amazon.

"It's really satisfying to know that in some small part Phil and I have helped Marines connect with their families which is something we need to do It's very important," Dixon said.

Dixon has been deployed twice to Iraq and has served on USS Boxer and USS Essex.

He now hopes to continue developing and publishing children’s books that involve each of the military services.

A portion of proceeds from the sales will go to support Tillman Scholars through the Pat Tillman Foundation.
