San Diego Exported $18.6 Billion in Goods in 2014

San Diego exported a record $18.6 billion worth of goods last year, up about $700 million from 2013, the U.S. Department of Commerce said Thursday.

The San Diego and Carlsbad area ranked 21st among major metropolitan areas in terms of exports, with Houston taking the top spot at $119 billion. The U.S. exported more than $1.6 trillion worth of goods last year.

More than a quarter of San Diego exports went to Mexico, with Canada, China, Israel and India as other major buyers. San Diego’s top export industries were computers and electronics, machinery, transportation equipment, plastics and rubber products, fabricated metal products and processed foods.


San Diego accounted for one-tenth of California’s merchandise exports in 2014. The largest California exporters were Los Angeles, at $76.3 billion, San Francisco, at $25.3 billion,n and San Jose, at $23.4 billion.
