Firefighters quickly knocked down a blaze aboard a boat near the Kona Kai Resort on Shelter Island Tuesday.
The fire sparked on the empty 50- to 60-foot vessel called "The Last Hurrah" docked in the Kona Marina for unknown reasons at about 3:30 a.m., fire officials said.
Harbor police and fire crews arrived to find the vessel engulfed in flames and quickly began their attack, knocking down the fire in less than 30 minutes.
It was raining when firefighters arrived, and San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Kelly Zombro said it helped tame flames.
"It’s a little surprising that the fire got so big considering it is raining and has been," he said. "It certainly slowed it down a little bit, but even with that there was some significant flames coming off of this,"
Zombro said the flames when they first arrived were shooting 20 feet into the air.
There was some concern that the fire could spread to neighboring boats because of their proximity within the marina but the aggressive attack from firefighters prevented the fire from growing, Zombro said.
Local
The fire was contained to the outside of the vessel.
"Everything on the exterior, on the very top cabin area, is what’s burnt. The interior never got any extension,"
There was no one on board at the time the fire erupted and no injuries reported.
Fire investigators were called to determine the cause of the fire.
