The Chargers announced on Thursday that the blackout was official. "This includes all signals within a 75-mile radius of the stadium and those areas whose television signal reaches within that 75-mile zone," according to the Chargers Web site.
On Wednesday, the Chargers said there were about 8,000 tickets still unsold for Sunday's home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Thursday, they said 7,000 tickets were still available.
The franchise hasn't had a blackout since 2004, a streak of 48 straight regular-season home games.
There are still ways to follow what's happening on the field, though. The game will be broadcast on the radio KIOZ Rock 105.3 FM and XTRA Sports 1360 AM. Fans who really just have to see the game will have a chance at midnight on Sunday, when NFL.com will show a replay of the game.
The ticket-sales problem is not isolated to this week's game. Team officials said Thursday that there were more than 12,000 seats that had yet to sell for the following week's game, when the Chargers’ will take on the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Oct. 3.
